EPCIS: Electronic Product Code Information Services

The GS1 EPCIS Standard is the global gold standard for the exchange of supply chain event data, which was published in its first version in 2007.

EPCIS Version 1.x

In its original form, EPCIS answers the questions "What, When, Where, and Why" regarding an object. The standard is based on XML and SOAP. The identification of actors ("Who") is done via special fields for actor identification (Business Party Identification) within the existing data structure.

EPCIS Version 2.0

With version 2.0, the standard was significantly expanded. In addition to the classic W-questions, the question of "How" (Condition) was officially integrated through the new "sensor element" (e.g., temperature, humidity). The identification of actors ("Who") is handled much more consistently and in a standardized manner thanks to improved JSON-LD structures.

In addition, the standard is now more web-friendly (REST/JSON), supports the mapping of complex manufacturing processes (Digital Twins), and is specifically designed to meet the requirements of the circular economy (recycling, sustainability proofs).
